I can hardly believe that 2014 is almost done. How did that happen? It's been a strange year for me, part good, part not great, but has ended the best way possible with my beloved nephew and niece flying over from South Africa to spend a month with me. I'm shattered already and the fun has barely begun. I do love keeping secrets...
There's something about being with family, isn't there? It was our first Christmas together as an entire family with aunts, uncles, brothers and cousins all gathered to celebrate, and it was filled with fun, laughter and industrial strength sized boxes of chocolates. I suspect we'll be eating chocolate until at least Easter...and then the Easter bunny comes hopping over the hill carrying more. Burp.
I suppose that's what Christmas is supposed to be all about, if only we could carry that feeling of goodwill towards all men into the new year. Somehow though, I do feel the real reason we celebrate has been lost amidst the sparkling wine, tinsel, selfie-sticks, gaily wrapped presents and previously mentioned sweet stuff. It seems to get worse year by year, despite the 'recession'. Bah humbug.
Sadly, once more, we're ending the year with tragedy as another airline goes missing, a ferry catches fire and a horrible incident with a rubbish truck in Glasgow continues to make headlines. So, for some, 2015 is going to start with sorrow and heartbreak, what can any of us actually say about this except to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
And on that cheerful note, I wish everyone all the very best for the new year, and the hope that it will be merry and bright, with dreams fulfilled and happiness abounding. And now I'm off to eat the leftover Christmas cake. With chocolate on the side.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!
